Stimulus Funds are Paving the Way for Smoother Roads in Preston, Denton and Federalsburg

(June 18, 2009) – On Monday, June 22, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin resurfacing MD 16 (Harmony Road) between MD 578 (Bethlehem Road) and Two Johns Road in Preston. This project, along with similar projects in Denton and Federalsburg, comprises a Caroline County areawide contract funded through $2.3 million provided by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Weather permitting, resurfacing of MD 16 will be complete by mid-July.

SHA crews will patch and resurface more than three miles of MD 16, working Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. During those hours, motorists should expect to encounter single lane closures outfitted with dynamic message signs, cones, drums and flaggers to safely guide them through the work zone. Similar construction is scheduled to take place later this summer on the following roadways (dates to be announced):

• One mile of MD 404 Business (Meeting House Road) between MD 404 (Shore Highway) and the Choptank River (at Riverland Road) in Denton.
• Nearly six miles of MD 318 (Federalsburg Bypass) between the Dorchester County Line (Reliance Road) and MD 315 (Bloomingdale Avenue) in Federalsburg.

SHA awarded this contract to David A. Bramble, Inc. Schedules, dates and work times for all projects are subject to change depending on weather and contractor schedules.

Statewide, ARRA-funded projects such as these are stimulating Maryland’s economy by providing and preserving thousands of jobs. They are producing long-term cost savings by extending roadway service life, while improving safety and ride quality. Citizens with questions about these projects or other state-maintained roadways in Caroline County may contact SHA’s District 2 Office at 1-800-637-9740 or 410-410-778-3061.

SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through highway work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times. Learn more about work zone safety and the Choose Safety for Life campaign at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
