STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE CAMBRIDGE CREEK DRAWBRIDGE ALONG MARYLAND AVENUE ON MARCH 24 AND 25

Closure Necessary to Perform Maintenance on Cambridge Creek Drawbridge;Bridge to be Closed to Vehicular and Marine Traffic           
          
(March 11, 2009) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration’s (SHA) will temporarily close the Maryland Avenue drawbridge over Cambridge Creek in Cambridge on Tuesday, March 24th and Wednesday, March 25th to make routine repairs to the drawbridge. The work will begin at 6 a.m. on March 24th and continue through 8 p.m. on March 25th, weather permitting.           
          
Motorists traveling along eastbound US 50 across the Frederick Malkus Jr. Bridge attempting to turn right onto Maryland Avenue and proceed across the drawbridge will be detoured to turn right at the next traffic signal along US 50 at Cedar Street, then turn right at Academy Street and back to Maryland Avenue. Motorists on the north or west side of Cambridge heading toward US 50 will be detoured onto Academy Street to turn left on Cedar Street, then turn left on westbound US 50 and back to Maryland Avenue.           
          
The bridge will also be closed to marine traffic. The Coast Guard has been notified and has provided approval of the marine closure.           
          
The closure is necessary as bridge crews make routine repairs to the drawbridge and associated machinery. The $77,000 project will be done by Covington Machine and Welding.
