CSX Crews to Perform Safety Repairs on Railroad Tracks; U.S. Alt 1 Will Be Closed For One Week

(March 12, 2009) – Next week, CSX railroad will close a portion of U.S. Alternate 1 between Decatur Street and Emerson Street in Hyattsville, Prince George’s County. The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will assist CSX with detours. U.S. Alternate 1 will be closed beginning 9 a.m. Monday, March 16 through 5 p.m. Friday, March 20.

The closure is necessary to ensure worker and motorist safety as CSX makes needed safety repairs to the existing railroad tracks across U.S. Alternate 1.

For traffic intending to travel northbound on U.S. 1 Alternate, motorists must turn left onto Charles L. Armentrout Drive to a right onto northbound U.S. 1.

For traffic intending to travel southbound on U.S. Alternate 1, motorists must continue south along U.S. Route 1 to a left onto Charles L. Armentrout Drive, and a right onto U.S. Alternate 1. Local traffic will be permitted to access U.S. Alternate 1 in both directions up to the closures. CSX contractors will utilize VMS and detour signs to alert motorists to the temporary traffic patterns.

Motorists with questions about U.S. Alternate Route 1 or any other State numbered roadways in Prince George’s County should call SHA’s District 3 Office at 1-800-749-0737. SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.
