ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 12, 2012) - Committed to improving safety and relieving congestion for tens of thousands of commuters in Baltimore County, Governor Martin O’Malley today announced $1.1 million in funding to design and engineer improvements at the MD 140 intersection with Painters Mill Road in Owings Mills.  The project is Baltimore County’s number one highway priority. 

“The intersection of Reisterstown Road at Painters Mill Road exemplifies the challenges we face with aging infrastructure that can no longer handle traffic demands,” said Governor O’Malley.  “These funds will get us moving in the right direction to ease congestion and improve safety at a notorious bottleneck.”

Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills is one of the most congested routes in Baltimore County with more than 38,000 vehicles traveling along the road each day.  Traffic volume is expected to reach 68,000 vehicles over the next 25 years. 

"This is excellent news as this was our top priority for transportation funding," said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. "It certainly reinforces Governor O'Malley's commitment to promoting jobs and economic development along the Reisterstown Road corridor."

The work along MD 140 at Painters Mill is a “breakout” phase of a larger project between Garrison View Road and Owings Mills Boulevard.  The State Highway Administration estimates the construction phase of the project to cost between $15 and $20 million.  The current design includes intersection widening for additional MD 140 “through” lanes and turn lanes with Painters Mill Road.
