(May 30, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is reducing eastbound US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) to one lane at US 29 (Columbia Pike) in Howard County.  Crews will work between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. tonight, tomorrow night and Friday night as part of the bridge replacement project in Ellicott City.

Since last summer, crews have been working to replace the bridge on the westbound US 40 ramp to southbound US 29, which carries traffic over the eastbound US 40 lanes. The new bridge is open to traffic and crews are finishing demolition of the old bridge. Over the next three nights, SHA will remove the remainder of the old bridge. Weather permitting, the entire project should be complete mid-summer. SHA’s contractor for the project is Kibler Construction of Finksburg.

Those who have questions about traffic operations along US 40 or other state numbered routes in Howard County may call SHA’s District 7 Office in Frederick at 301-624-8100 or toll free at      1-800-635-5119.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.  Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer driving.  Safer work zones. For everyone.
