(April 4, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is smoothing out several roads in Somerset and Wicomico counties just in time for the summer vacation season.  Weather permitting, all resurfacing projects will be complete by the end of June.

SHA will grind, patch, resurface and restripe the roadways, as well as install new pavement markings.  The roads to be resurfaced include:

• MD 362 (Mt. Vernon Road) between MD 675 (Somerset Avenue) and Crisfield Lane in Somerset County (one-half mile - $150,000);

• Northbound US 13 (Ocean Highway) at MD 362 (Mt. Vernon Road) and US 13 at MD 363 (Deal Island Road) in Somerset County (nearly one mile - $146,000);

• MD 667 (Rehoboth Road/Hudson Corner Road) between US 13 and Tulls Corner Road in Somerset County (six and one-half miles - $904,000);

• MD 675 between MD 822 (UMES Boulevard) and US 13 in Somerset County (one mile - $94,000);

• MD 363 between Osburn Webster Road to the Upper Thorofare Bridge in Somerset County (one mile - $165,000); and

• MD 352 (Whitehaven Road) between MD 349 (Nanticoke Road) and Capitola Road in Wicomico County (six and one-half miles - $688,000).

SHA awarded the projects totaling $2.1 million to American Paving, Inc., of Eden.  Lane closures are possible Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  SHA will use cones and barrels and flagging operations to guide motorists through the work zones.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.   Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone.
