(March 2, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration will close northbound MD 295 at I-195 for about an hour and a half this afternoon to remove an overhead sign structure located north of I-195 in Anne Arundel County.  The sign removal will begin at approximately 1 p.m. and the road should be open by 2:30 p.m.

Northbound MD 295 traffic will be detoured to westbound I-195 where motorists can use northbound US 1 or northbound I-95 as alternatives.  Motorists wanting to use eastbound I-195 toward BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport will be unaffected.

As a result of an incident on I-66 in Virginia on February 11 when an overhead cantilever sign fell, SHA immediately began inspection of all similar SHA-owned signs.  SHA inspectors identified the sign on MD 295 as similar to the one that fell in Virginia.  All other similar signs have been inspected and are safe.

A temporary ground-mounted sign will be in place by this weekend to provide motorists the information that was posted on the sign to be removed.
