(Nov. 21, 2011) -- The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and State Highway Administration (SHA) are alerting motorists of the potential for increased traffic on local roads in the area of the Intercounty Connector (ICC)/MD 200 as they prepare to open the ICC’s second segment to traffic by 6 a.m. tomorrow, Nov. 22.  The second segment that opens tomorrow stretches for 10 miles from Georgia Avenue in Montgomery County to I-95 in Prince George’s County.  It connects with the first segment of the ICC, from I-270/I-370 to Georgia Avenue, which opened to traffic in February.

Motorists can “test drive” the entire ICC from I-370 to I-95 at no cost through Sunday, Dec. 4, at midnight.  The MDTA will electronically collect tolls on the ICC beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 5.

Traffic on the ICC, as well as on local roads leading to and from the ICC, may be more congested due to holiday travel and as motorists take advantage of the test-drive period.  Those local roads include Shady Grove Road, Georgia Avenue, Norbeck Road, Layhill Road, New Hampshire Avenue, US 29, Fairland Road, Briggs Chaney Road, Musgrove Road, Old Columbia Pike and Powder Mill Road.

MDTA and SHA will monitor traffic on MD 200 and the local roadways, particularly during the first two weeks of operation.  If traffic conditions warrant, SHA is prepared to make adjustments to traffic signals, as well as changes to lane availability and access.  Local police will be available to assist motorists at unsignalized intersections, if necessary.  Any changes affecting motorists will be communicated via overhead and portable dynamic message signs, Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) messages and Maryland’s 511 travel information system.

Call 511 or visit MD511.org for statewide travel information.  For more information about the ICC and its operations, please call the ICC Community Outreach office at 1-866-462-0020 or visit the ICC project web site iccproject.com and/or the MDTA web site mdta.maryland.gov.
