Work Will Require Single-Lane and Occasional Ramp Closures; Motorist Urged to Plan Extra Travel Time

(April 24, 2023) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin projects on Monday, April 24, to improve the pavement on sections of US 1 (Washington Boulevard) and MD 32 (Sykesville Road) in Howard County. The work should be complete by mid-summer, weather permitting.

Starting Monday evening, crews will work overnight, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day, to improve the road surface on US 1 between Whiskey Bottom Road and the bridge over the Patuxent River, north of Gorman Road in Laurel. Drivers should expect single-lane closures guided by a flagging operation between. The overnight work will occur Sundays through Thursdays, with occasional daytime work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Following the US 1 improvements, expected to be complete in June, crews will begin improving the southbound lanes on MD 32 between I-70 and MD 144 (Frederick Road) in West Friendship. Crews will work overnight, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays. This work will require a single-lane closure on southbound MD 32 and the closure and detour of the eastbound I-70 ramp to southbound MD 32. The detour includes eastbound I-70 to northbound MD 32, with a U-turn to access southbound MD 32.

Contractor Allan Myers Inc., of Jessup, will perform the work. Crews will use electronic signs, barrels, and cones to safely guide motorists through the work zone. The State Highway Administration understands roadwork can be an inconvenience for motorists, but the work is necessary to maintain a safe and reliable transportation system.

As spring arrives, motorists are urged to remain vigilant for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. Remember that motorcycles can be hidden from view in vehicle blind spots. Please look twice and save a life.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
