Project will Clean, Paint and Repair the Bridge During Overnight Hours
(June 10, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning work on a project to clean, paint and rehabilitate the US 15 bridge over the Potomac River, CSX railroad tracks and the C&O Canal in the Point of Rocks area of Frederick County, at the Maryland and Virginia state line. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2027, weather permitting.
The two-lane, eight-span camelback truss bridge was originally built in 1939. The project will help ensure the bridge’s structural integrity and safety.
Symmetric Painting, LLC, of Elkton, will perform the work. Crews will work overnight throughout the project’s duration. During the overnight work, there will be single-lane closures with flagging operations to maintain two-way travel across the bridge, which sees an average of 23,000 vehicles per day. The work will not impact operations on the CSX railroad tracks or access to the boat ramp and the C&O canal.

The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during construction as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert and focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and driving patterns. Slow down and move over in work zones. It’s the law. Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for assistance.
This project is consistent with the Maryland Department of Transportation’s
Serious About Safety initiative, a department-wide commitment to advance improvements that drive safety goals and save lives.
