​$1.98 Million Project Improves Pedestrian Safety in Beltsville 

(June 29, 2023) –The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has completed a $1.98 million safety and resurfacing project on US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) between Rhode Island Avenue and MD 212 (Powder Mill Road) in the Beltsville area of Prince George’s County.

The project, which began in July 2022, was completed this month and included the following improvements: 

Upgraded ADA-compliant sidewalks at US 1 near Southard Drive

“As we improve our transportation facilities across Maryland, it’s critical that we focus on enhancements that serve all users – those in cars and trucks as well as those on bicycles, scooters or on foot,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “The improvements along US 1 in Beltsville help us toward the goal of a transportation network that’s safe, convenience and accessible for all.”

“US 1 is a busy corridor through Beltsville and it is essential that it serves all road users well,” said State Highway Administrator Tim Smith. “The newly added crosswalk, upgraded pedestrian signals and widened sidewalks will improve safety and mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists – our most vulnerable road users.”
