(September 13, 2011) – Drivers who work, live and visit Kent County will soon travel on a newly-paved two-mile section of MD 20 (Rock Hall Road).  While weather dependent, the State Highway Administration (SHA) resurfacing project is expected to start on September 22 and complete by mid-October.

The cost of the resurfacing project is $565,560 and includes more than two miles on MD 20 from Shipyard Lane to MD 21 (Tolchester Beach Road).  The last time MD 20 was resurfaced in this area was in 1999.  The resurfacing contract, which SHA awarded to David A. Bramble, Inc. of Chestertown, includes permanent line stripping and raised pavement markers.

Work starts at 7 a.m. and SHA crews will use variable message signs, cones and barrels together with a flagging operation directing single lane closures until 5 p.m.  More than 5,000 vehicles travel along MD 20 each day so drivers should allow extra travel time and expect delays.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.   Saver driving and safer work zones benefit everyone.
