(August 24, 2011) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is inspecting the MD 4 (Patuxent Beach Road) Bridge over the Patuxent River (Thomas Johnson Bridge) today and tomorrow, August 25, as a precaution following yesterday’s earthquake.  Crews will alternate traffic on one lane with a flagging operation 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day.  Motorists should allow extra time for traffic delays crossing the bridge during this time.

Two structural engineers will inspect the bridge using a large crane with a “bucket” on an arm that extends over the side and under the bridge.  The “snooper” truck must be parked in a lane on top of the bridge and allow safe, hands-on and visual inspection underneath.

Constructed in 1977, the Thomas Johnson Bridge carries more than 28,000 vehicles each day between Calvert and St. Mary’s counties.

SHA will inspect other bridges throughout the State based on priority given the location, design, length and type of bridge.  Motorists may encounter other lane closures as inspectors continue work as a precaution following the earthquake.  SHA appreciates travelers’ patience as we perform the unscheduled work and lane closures.

SHA reminds motorists to plan ahead and check travel conditions by calling 511 or visiting www.MD511.org.  Sign up to personalize travel route information through MY511 on the website.

In work zones stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
