(July 28, 2011) – On Saturday, July 30, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is opening the first section of the bicycle/pedestrian trail between Needwood Road to Emory Lane.  The trail is part of the Intercounty Connector (ICC) Project.

Beginning at Needwood Road the trail will pass under MD 115 (Muncaster Mill Road) to Emory Lane.  SHA is providing access to Muncaster Mill Road from the trail.  The trail terminates at MD 97 (Georgia Avenue).  SHA will open subsequent bicycle/pedestrian trails that connect with the terminus at MD 97 as the other sections of the ICC are completed.

The ICC will include the construction of a total of approximately 11.5 miles of new bicycle/pedestrian trails and another three miles of reconstructed bicycle and pedestrian trails across the project area.  These new and reconstructed ICC trails will link several existing and planned trails and bike lanes providing greener transportation options and complimenting Montgomery County’s vast hiker/biker trail network.

Once completed, the ICC bicycle/pedestrian trail will accommodate a cyclist’s travel from the Shady Grove Metrorail in Gaithersburg to the Muirkirk Commuter Rail Station in Prince George’s County, which is the entire breadth of the project area.

For more information about the project, persons may call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020 or visit the ICC project website at www.iccproject.com.
