(June 7, 2011)  -- On Wednesday night June 8, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will shift traffic along Norbeck Road/ MD28 from a temporary road to the permanent Norbeck Road Bridge over the Intercounty Connector (ICC).   This work is located within Contract B of the ICC.

Following are details of activities scheduled to take place this week:

Tuesday night, June 7 (8 p.m. – 5 a.m.)

Similar to Monday night’s activities, at the intersection of Wintergate Drive and Norbeck Road, nightwork paving will require the closure of eastbound lane on Norbeck Road.   Traffic will be maintained in both directions under a flagging operation using the westbound lane.

Wednesday night, June 8 (8 p.m. – 5 a.m.)

In order to complete the traffic switch onto the permanent Norbeck Road/ MD 28:

• The left turn lane on Wintergate Drive will be closed, but left turns will be allowed from the right lane on Wintergate Drive onto Norbeck Road.
• The left turn lane from MD 200 (ICC) onto Norbeck Road will be closed, but left turns will be maintained from the right lane on the ramp to Norbeck Road.

Flagging operations will allow for the installation of new pavement markings along MD 28.   The Maryland Transportation Authority and Montgomery County police will be on-hand to assist and maintain flow of traffic at the intersections within the work zone.

During the traffic shift motorists should anticipate delays. Advance warning signs will advise travelers of the changed traffic patterns and variable message signs will alert motorists of specific activities and travel patterns.  Emergency vehicle access and pedestrian access will be maintained through the work zone during all traffic switch phases.

In case of inclement weather or unforeseen events, the above activities will be postponed to the following evening Thursday, June 9.

As of June 1, Contract B, which extends from just east of MD 97 to just west of US 29, is approximately 80 percent complete.  This section, along with Contract C from just west of US 29 to just east of I-95, is scheduled to open to traffic later this year or in early 2012.

Construction season is here with numerous active work zone sites that include major construction projects taking months to complete and mobile operations taking only minutes.  While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
