(March 3, 2011) -   Next week, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) begins a $3.3 million bridge project to replace the deck on the MD 202 (Landover Road) bridge over I-95/I-495 in Landover.  Weather permitting, the project should be complete spring 2012.

In addition to replacing the existing bridge deck, SHA will:

• upgrade the traffic detection at the ramp from westbound MD 202 to southbound I-95/I-495
• install a new pole and cabinet for the existing CHART traffic camera on the bridge, and
• resurface the approaching roadway.

Although structurally safe, the bridge was built in 1962 and is beginning to show signs of deterioration.  The work will help to extend its service life an additional 30 to 50 years.

SHA is managing the project using four phases of construction.  The first phase begins this spring and includes closing access from westbound MD 202 to the ramp for southbound I-95/I-495 (detour below).  The closure will last for the duration of the project.  The ramp from eastbound MD 202 to southbound I-95/I-495 will remain open during construction.

Motorists can expect delays on MD 202 and I-95.I-495 during construction.  SHA will close lanes on MD 202 and I-95/I-495 according to this schedule:
• Eastbound/Westbound MD 202: single lane closures Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight Monday through Friday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
• Eastbound MD 202:  double lane closures overnight Monday through Friday between    9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
• Northbound/Southbound I-95/I-495: single lane closures Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The left turn lane and ramp from westbound MD 202 to the ramp for southbound I-95/I-495 will be closed 24/7 for the duration of the project beginning this spring.  Motorists will be directed to use the following detours:

Drivers traveling from westbound MD 202 to southbound I-95/I-495 will be directed to travel west on MD 202, turn left on Lottsford Road, and turn right onto Arena Drive to access southbound I-95/I-495.

Crews will use flaggers, variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  SHA awarded the contract to Anchor Construction Company.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
