(January 4, 2011) – Repairs to the MD 662 (Old Wye Mills Road) bridge over Mill Creek will begin on Monday, January 10.  Replacement of the bridge parapets (walls) and guardrails and installation of safety fence are expected to be completed by early February, weather permitting.

To ensure the safety of motorists and workers during construction, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will close MD 662 at the bridge.  Motorists will be redirected to US 50 (Ocean Gateway) and MD 404 (Queen Anne Highway).  Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists around the work zone.

The MD 662 bridge over Mill Creek is located approximately three-quarters of a mile west of US 50, approximately two miles south of Wye Mills on Maryland’s eastern shore.  The concrete girder bridge was originally constructed in 1914 and carries an average of 1,000 vehicles per day.

These repairs are part of Maryland’s System Preservation Program.  Covington Machine and Welding of Annapolis is the contractor for the $116,000 project.

SHA encourages all motorists to “Think Orange” while driving through highway work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times. Learn more about work zone safety and the Choose Safety for Life campaign at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
