(November 23, 2010) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) today temporarily closed two right lanes of northbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) at the Forestville Road Bridge after an over height vehicle struck a safety shield underneath the bridge.  SHA will reopen the lanes as soon as the damaged metal structure is secured and it is safe for motorists.

Construction crews will work as quickly as possible in an effort to have as little impact to holiday and rush hour traffic.  However, SHA expects traffic to be heavy and backups to occur until the lanes are reopened, possibly by 5 p.m.

The safety shield is in place as part of the Forestville Road Bridge rehabilitation project to keep construction debris from falling on the highway below.  The bridge clearance is 14 feet high and signs displaying the clearance are on both sides of I-95/I-495 as well as the overhead digital message signs.

Customers who have questions about I-95/I-495 or any other State numbered roadway in Prince George’s County should call SHA’s District 3 office at 1-800-749-0737.  SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.
