(October 15, 2010) –This weekend the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin night work for two weekends as part of the safety and resurfacing project on US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) between MD 410 (East West Highway) and Albion Road in University Park.

The single lane closures will occur over the next two weekends, Friday, October 15 and Saturday, October 16 as well as Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., weather permitting.  The closures are necessary for crews to complete patching and begin grinding on US 1.  The extra time will help crews complete the project before cold temperatures affect the ability to lay asphalt for the new road surface.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-funded resurfacing project on US 1 includes removing the top layer of asphalt and resurfacing the existing roadway.  As part of this project, SHA has cleaned and repaired existing storm drain inlets and pipes, replaced curb and gutters, and will install new pavement markings.  The project will improve the safety and ride quality for nearly 25,000 daily motorists and improve access for pedestrians throughout the corridor.  SHA is nearing completion on replacing and installing more than 3500 feet of sidewalk and sidewalk ramps as part of SHA’s commitment to ADA standards.

SHA will use variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.   Weather permitting, the project should be complete this winter.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
