(August 27, 2010) -- As part of the construction of the State’s $2.5 billion Intercounty Connector (ICC) project, crews will temporarily close all four lanes of the southbound    I-270  south of exit #10 (Diamond Avenue) for brief 15-minute intervals during the early morning hours of August 31, 2010.  The four southbound lanes will have two separate 15-minute brief closures between midnight and 4 a.m. along southbound I-270.

The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) encourages motorists to use alternate routes such as MD 355 during this period.   SHA will use electronic message signs placed along the roadway to alert motorists of the impending date of the roadway closure.  Concrete barriers, temporary crash cushions, barrels, temporary traffic signs and the electronic message signs will alert and guide motorists through the work zone.

The closures are necessary to erect an overhead sign structure. The work is part of the Contract A section of the ICC from I-370 to East of MD 97 (Georgia Avenue).

As of August 1, Contract A is 83 percent complete. Contract A is scheduled to open in late 2010/early 2011.

Intercounty Constructors is the contractor for the $475 million Contract A segment.  The company is a Joint Venture consisting of Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA, Corman Construction of Annapolis Junction, MD and G.A & F.C. Wagman of York, PA.

When workers are on the road, “THINK ORANGE”, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.  For more information about the project, citizens may call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020.
