(June 15, 2010) – Yesterday, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) began an $811,000 safety and resurfacing project along US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) between MD 410 (East West Highway) and Albion Road in University Park, Prince George’s County. Weather permitting, construction will be complete early 2011.
The project includes removing the top layer of asphalt and resurfacing the existing roadway. Other work includes cleaning and repairing existing storm drain inlets and pipes, replacing curb and gutters, and installing new pavement markings. The project improves the safety and ride quality for nearly 25,000 daily motorists and also improves access for pedestrians throughout the corridor. More than 3500 feet of sidewalk will be replaced and sidewalk ramps will be upgraded as part of SHA’s commitment to ADA standards.
During construction, motorists can expect single-lane closures along US 1 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and overnight Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
This project is made possible through Governor Martin O’Malley’s aggressive management of the requirements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, bringing critically needed transportation investments to Maryland. Projects such as these are stimulating Maryland’s economy by supporting hundreds of jobs. Follow the delivery of these projects at
