Overnight Closures Necessary to Construct ICC Bridge over Bonifant Road

(April 9, 2010)  – During the week of April 12, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close a section of Bonifant Road between Alderton Road and Carona Drive in Silver Spring.  This temporary closure is necessary to construct a bridge that will carry the Intercounty Connector (ICC) over Bonifant Road.  The work is part of the $2.5 billion ICC project (contract B) scheduled to open in late 2011.

SHA will close the section of Bonifant Road between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. during the work week.  Motorists will be routed around the closure using other roadways including MD 182 (Layhill Road), MD 28 (Norbeck Road), Norwood Road and MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue).

The ICC team has informed residents and businesses in the area of the pending temporary closure through various outreach efforts including road signs, fliers, phone calls, emails and personal visits.  Emergency services agencies and schools have also been notified.

As of March 1, Contract B (MD 97 to US 29) is approximately 30 percent complete.  SHA awarded the $559.7 million ICC to MD 200 Constructors, a joint venture consisting of Kiewit Southern Co., G.A. & F.C. Wagman, Inc. and Corman Construction, Inc.

For more information about the project, citizens may call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020, or visit the ICC website at www.iccproject.com. SHA encourages all motorists to Choose Safety for Life and “Think Orange” while driving through work zones by observing the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.  More information about the Choose Safety for Life Campaign may be found at www.choosesafetyforlife.com .
