New Pavement Markings Complement Advisory Signs Near Hayward Road

(April 7, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) last month began a multi-phased project to improve safety on southbound US 15 (Catoctin Mountain Highway) at the Hayward Road intersection in Frederick County.

Last month, additional signs were installed to advise motorists to expect cross traffic and encourage drivers to slow down.  SHA also installed signs along US 15 near Hayward Road in the median, along the shoulder and one-mile north of the intersection reminding motorists of the need to watch their speed.

This week, SHA is adding new pavement markings prior to the intersection as another way to encourage drivers to slow down.  SHA is implementing the enhancements with the cooperation of the Maryland State Police (MSP) and the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, who will be increasing speed enforcement efforts in the area.

SHA is placing three additional sets of rumble strips across both southbound travel lanes just north of the intersection.  Additional traffic calming pavement markings are being installed on southbound US 15 between Hayward Road and 1,500 feet north of the intersection.  As drivers approach Hayward Road spacing between the pavement markings will gradually decrease to create the sense the roadway is narrowing and alert drivers they are approaching a more urban section of US 15 with additional access locations.  The seemingly narrowing road is intended to encourage drivers to reduce speeds as they approach the intersection.

Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
