SHA to Lower Dr. Perry Road to Provide Additional Clearance for New Bridge as Part of I-270 Project; Motorists Should Expect Delays

(March 25, 2010) – On Monday, March 29 the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin major construction on Dr. Perry Road at the bridge over I-270.  Work is expected to last two days, weather permitting.  The work is part of the $8 million project to replace the bridges on I-270 over Dr. Perry Road.  Weather permitting, SHA will complete the overall project this spring.

In some sections SHA will lower Dr. Perry Road up to five feet to provide additional clearance beneath the new bridge.  Major delays should be expected during construction.  Crews will work around the clock until the project is completed.  Traffic on I-270 will not be impacted as part of this work.

Local traffic and access to businesses will be maintained throughout construction.  Although SHA will not designate a detour route, motorists are strongly advised to avoid Dr. Perry Road and seek alternate routes.  Motorists traveling on Fire Tower Road are advised to avoid the Dr. Perry Road/Fire Tower Road intersection and use MD 355 (Urbana Pike) as an alternate route.

SHA awarded the overall contract to F. O. Day, Inc. of Rockville.  Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along I-270, or other state-numbered routes in Frederick County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

During the next several months, there could be more than 350 work zones.  Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
