March 22 Opening Follows Bridge Replacement Project

(March 18, 2010) – On Monday, March 22, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will reopen MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) between MD 17 (Burkittsville Road) and MD 478 (Knoxville Road) in Knoxville, Frederick County.  The road has been closed to traffic since late spring 2008 as part of a project to replace the MD 180 Bridge over a tributary of the Potomac River.

SHA worked closely with the Maryland Historical Trust to coordinate cultural issues.  Maryland Department of the Environment approval was also necessary to assure that SHA maintained public safety and the integrity of the roadway.

“SHA appreciates the patience of residents and motorists as we worked through some complicated project issues,” said SHA District Engineer David Coyne.  “The closure has been an inconvenience for residents, commuters and business owners who use MD 180 for their daily travels and SHA is pleased to open the road early next week.”

SHA thanks the residents of Knoxville, Frederick County, and commuters for their patience and cooperation.  Those who have questions about traffic operations along MD 180, or other State numbered routes in Frederick County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.
