SHA Has Established Detours; Motorists urged to Use I-95, US 1 or MD 295 as Alternate Routes

(March 5, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is on the scene of a fire in a work zone along US 29 at Fairland Road in Montgomery County.  Crews are assisting with traffic operations throughout the region.

Currently, all lanes are closed along US 29 at Fairland Road.  Washington Gas is on site working to shut off a gas line that is apparently on fire.   SHA is using arrow boards and portable variable message signs to detour US 29 traffic.

Detour for Northbound US 29:
• Northbound US 29 to Fairland Road to Briggs Chaney Road and back to northbound US 29.

Detour for Southbound US 29:
• Southbound US 29 to Briggs Chaney Road to Old Columbia Pike to Randolph Road to southbound US 29.

Motorists can also use MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue), I-95, MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) or US 1 (Washington Boulevard) as alternate routes.  SHA will continue to provide assistance with traffic operations and will open lanes as soon as safely possible.

SHA encourages motorists to log on to www.roads.maryland.gov and click on the CHART icon for the latest real-time traffic information and access to traffic cameras.
