Temporary Traffic Signals Will Alternate Each Direction of Traffic

(March 3, 2010)  -  On or about March 15, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin repairs to the MD 33 (St. Michaels Road) bridge over Oak Creek in Newcomb, Talbot County.  Weather permitting, the $1.1 million is expected be completed by mid-June.

The bridge which was built in 1965 is structurally sound, but concrete sections need to be replaced.  SHA will replace the existing concrete beams of the span with steel beams, as well as install a new concrete deck (driving surface).  More than 12,000 vehicles per day travel along MD 33 in Newcomb so motorists should expect travel delays.

SHA will work between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The project will require occasional temporary 15 minute closures along MD 33 during off-peak hours.  Crews will install temporary traffic signals to alternate traffic across the bridge.  SHA will use VMS (Variable Message Signs), cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.

SHA awarded the project to Covington Machine and Welding Inc. of Annapolis.  SHA thanks customers for their patience and encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
