Project to Improve Pedestrian Safety Access along MD 97

(May 8, 2009) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will next week begin installing 1,000 feet of new sidewalk along southbound MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) between Tidewater Court and Queen Elizabeth/Prince Phillip Drive in Olney, Montgomery County. Weather permitting, construction should be complete fall 2009.

The $500,000 project includes installation of new ADA compliant sidewalk along southbound MD 97, as well as upgrading the pedestrian accessible signal at the intersection of MD 97 and Queen Elizabeth Drive to an audible/countdown pedestrian signal. Other safety improvements include installation of a retaining wall, utility pole and fire hydrants.

Construction of the sidewalk will help pedestrians safely access nearby places of worship and shopping centers. More than 9,900 vehicles drive along MD 97 near MD 108 daily. Pedestrians in this area currently must walk along MD 97 on the shoulder or grassy areas.

Motorists can expect single lane closures along southbound MD 97 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. overnights Sunday through Thursday. SHA will provide variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices. Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected. Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
