​Bridge To Be Closed and Detoured beginning September 8 to Complete Project 

(September 3, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin project to clean and paint the US 13 Business (Market Street) Bridge over the Pocomoke River in Pocomoke City, starting Tuesday, September 8. The work, which will require the closure and detour of the bridge, is expected to be completed by Saturday, November 8​​, weather permitting. The start date has since been changed to Monday, September 21.​

The bridge, built in 1921, requires periodic maintenance work such as this to prevent corrosion on the steel bridge members and continue to maintain the structural integrity of the structure.  The work will consist of removing the old paint and applying a new coating of paint, which will require complete containment of the entire drawbridge to protect the river below.   

During this time, the bridge will remain in the open position (closed to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic) until November 8. The channel will remain open to marine traffic during this time.   

While the work is taking place, motorists will be guided by a signed detour route that includes MD 364 (Market Street), US 13 (Ocean Highway), MD 250A (Old Virginia Road), and US 13 Business (Market Street). 

Olympus Painting Contractors, Inc. of Tarpons Springs, FL will use concrete barriers, barrels, and cones to direct motorists through the detour route. Arrow panels and VMS boards placed prior to the detour will alert motorists to the closures and changing traffic patterns.     

The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during construction as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and changing driving patterns. Slow down and move over in work zones. It’s the law.
