Project will Construct New Crossover and Install a J-Turn on US 15 at Angleberger Road
(August 20, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning construction on a project to improve safety and roadway operations on
US 15 (Catoctin Mountain Highway) at the intersection of Auburn Road and Angleberger Road in Frederick County.
The $10.4 million project will reconstruct the existing crossover to channel left turns from US 15 to side roads. The new crossover also will have a raised median to prohibit side-street traffic from crossing both directions of US 15 at one time. Instead, Angleberger Road traffic will turn right onto northbound US 15 and use a J-turn at a new crossover
about 3,000 feet north of the US 15 and Angleberger Road intersection. The new deceleration and acceleration lanes will allow northbound motorists to U-turn and access southbound traffic. J-turns greatly reduce the risk of right-angle crashes, as shown in
studies by the Federal Highway Administration.

The project’s schedule includes daytime and overnight hours Monday through Friday. During work hours, US 15 may have single-lane and shoulder closures. There will be no work on northbound US 15 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on southbound US 15 from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. to avoid disruptions with commuter traffic.
Kibler Construction Company, of Finksburg, is the prime contractor for the project. The project is expected to be completed by late 2027. Learn more about this project by visiting the
Project Portal page. To enhance work zone safety for workers and motorists, the project will have Automated Speed Enforcement devices operating on US 15 to ensure compliance with the posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour.
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is
Serious About Safety and committed to advance improvements that drive safety goals and save lives. Pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain alert and avoid distractions when traveling through work zones. Motorists should obey all posted speed limits. Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
