Seven Ramps to be Resurfaced; Nighttime Weeknight Ramp Closures Expected through Late July

(May 11, 2009) –This week, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin resurfacing the ramps at the I-695/MD 295 interchange. The work will necessitate closing of one or more of the ramps at a time during the overnight hours of 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, during the next 10 weeks. Detour signs will be posted, and electronic variable message signs will be in place to alert motorists to the specific ramp closures in place each weeknight.

The ramp resurfacing work is part of SHA’s larger I-695 resurfacing project currently underway between MD 648 (Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard) and the Patapsco River Bridge at the Baltimore/Anne Arundel County line. Both the inner and outer loops of I-695 are being resurfaced. Work includes patching, grinding, milling, paving and striping. An average of 130,000 vehicles use this stretch of the Baltimore Beltway each day.

This project will provide long-term cost savings by extending roadway service life, and will improve safety by improving traction, drainage and visibility of lane markings. Resurfacing also results in improved ride quality, which can reduce vehicle tire and suspension wear.

The general contractor for this $4 million project is Reliable Contracting. SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through highway work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.
