New Traffic Patterns Will Be in Effect; Drivers Advised to Stay Alert and Seek Alternate Routes

(December 4, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will perform a traffic shift on Suitland Parkway eastbound as part of the construction for the MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) at Suitland Parkway Interchange Project. The shifts will take approximately three nights to complete, weather permitting.

Beginning the week of December 7, Suitland Parkway eastbound will be reduced to one lane. All eastbound traffic will proceed onto MD 4 southbound and make a U-turn at Dowerhouse Road to access MD 4 northbound. Traffic on MD 4 northbound and southbound will also shift toward the existing median. All lanes on MD 4 will be maintained.

Temporary nightly lane closures will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. The traffic shifts are necessary to keep crews and drivers safe as the project moves into a different phase of construction.

Electronic message boards and road signage are in place to alert drivers to the new traffic patterns. The new traffic patterns will be in place through the end of the project. The project is expected to be complete by fall 2028.

The State Highway Administration understands that roadwork can be an inconvenience, but the work is necessary to ensure a safe and reliable highway network. Drivers are asked to slow down, be patient, allow extra travel time, stay alert and move over when approaching a work zone.

Concrete General, Inc., of Gaithersburg, MD, is the State Highway Administration’s contractor for this project. More information on the project is available here. Customers who have questions may contact the District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll-free at 1-800-749-0737.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
