Low Temperatures, Winds and Blowing Snow May Impact Drivers; Reduced Travel Speeds Advised Statewide

(February 15, 2015) – Today, the Maryland State Highway Administration continues storm operations by making roads passable by applying salt and other chemicals to State-numbered routes. While last night’s storm has passed, cold temperatures and winds will create dangerous conditions for drivers across all of Maryland.

With the possibility of blowing snow, crews will fight an uphill battle throughout the day making roads passable for drivers. Statewide, more than 1,200 trucks supported by emergency operations personnel are responding to roads conditions. Below freezing temperatures will limit the effectiveness of salt and liquid chemicals used to treat the roads. Drivers should be prepared to face very challenging road conditions and should reduce speeds, especially along ramps, bridges and overpasses.

The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings across the state. Air and pavement temperatures are in the single digits in some places, and crews will continue to address areas where drifting snow is likely to occur. High winds reaching 60 mph bring the possibility of downed power lines and fallen trees. Drivers should be prepared to turn around if they encounter these situations on any road.
When approaching signals without power, drivers should treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
