Safety Project in Riverdale Made Possible Through Stimulus Funding; Work Includes ADA Compliant Sidewalks

(November 13, 2009) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $1.9 million safety and resurfacing project on a 1.3 mile section of MD 410 (Riverdale Road) between MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) and 67th Place in Riverdale, Prince George’s County.  Weather permitting, construction will be complete summer 2010.

Work includes removing the top layers of asphalt and resurfacing the existing roadway.  Crews will also clean and repair existing storm drain inlets and pipes, replace damaged or deteriorated concrete sidewalks and ramps, curb and gutters and upgrade existing sidewalk ramps to Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standards, upgrade existing guardrails, and improve pavement markings and traffic signs.

To better moderate traffic flow, crews will replace traffic loop detectors at the MD 410 / 64th Avenue and MD 410 / 62nd Street/Mustang Avenue intersections.  Traffic signals will also be upgraded at the MD 410 / MD 201 intersection and the ramps at MD 295 (Baltimore Washington Parkway) with audible and countdown pedestrian signals.

During construction, motorists can expect single lane closures on MD 410 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and overnight Sunday through Thursday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.  Crews may also close two lanes overnight Sunday through Thursday between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.  This section of MD 410 carries over 38,000 vehicles per day.

American Infrastructure is the contractor for the project.   Crews will provide variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

This project is made possible through Governor Martin O’Malley’s aggressive management of the requirements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, bringing critically needed transportation investments to Maryland.  Projects such as these are stimulating Maryland’s economy by supporting hundreds of jobs.  Follow the delivery of these projects at www.recovery.maryland.gov, which tracks every category of ARRA spending and provides contract-level details to the public in an effort to achieve new levels of government transparency and efficiency.
