Cleaning and Painting Will Prevent Corrosion and Enhance Longevity of Six Bridges

(November 6, 2009) – This week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) begins a $1.6 million cleaning and painting project on six bridges in Montgomery County.  Weather permitting, the project will be complete fall 2010.  SHA is cleaning and painting the following bridges:
  • I-495 (Capital Beltway) bridge over Kensington Parkway in Kensington;
  • MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) bridge over Rock Creek in Kensington;
  • MD 410 (East-West Highway) bridge over Rock Creek in Chevy Chase;
  • I-495 (Capital Beltway) bridge over Seven Locks Road in Potomac;
  • Bridge carrying the southbound I-270 ramp to I-495 (Capital Beltway) inner loop in Bethesda; and
  • Bridge carrying the southbound I-270 ramp to southbound MD 355 (Wisconsin Avenue) in Bethesda.
Works includes repainting the steel beams and bridge structures, and install new drainage troughs.  The work will prevent corrosion on the main support structures and help to prolong the life of the bridges.  Crews are currently working on the I-495 Bridge over Kensington Parkway and MD 410 Bridge over Rock Creek.  Weather permitting this work should be complete by mid-November, crews will then begin work on the I-495 Bridge over Seven Locks Road and MD 185 Bridge over Rock Creek, weather permitting.

SHA will close lanes during the day Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.; additional lane closures can also be expected as necessary:
  • MD 185 and MD 410 bridges:
    Single lane closures overnight Sunday through Friday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • I-270 and I-495 bridges:
    Single lane closures overnight Sunday through Friday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., and possible double lane closures overnight Monday through Friday between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
  • Seven Locks Road and Kensington Parkway:
    Full-time flagging operations in effect Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and overnight Sunday through Thursday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
