Maryland SafeZones Speed Enforcement Promotes Safety, Awareness in Work Zones
(November 4, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is continuing construction on a $61.9 million project to improve six bridges and the roadway along I-70 from west of MD 63 (Greencastle Pike) to Bower Avenue in Washington County. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2027, weather permitting.
The project is replacing and widening two bridges over I-81, two bridges over US 11 (Virginia Avenue) and two bridges over the Norfolk Southern Railway. A 1.8-mile stretch of I-70 also will be widened and resurfaced, from west of MD 63 to the Bower Avenue overpass. Work along this stretch will include new traffic barriers, stormwater management improvements, upgraded signage, lighting and pavement markings for enhanced safety and road quality.
Motorists should anticipate long-term lane closures throughout the construction of the project. Portable variable message signs, temporary traffic signs and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone. Contractor Triton Construction Inc., of St. Albans, W.Va., will perform the work. Learn more about the project here.
As part of the ongoing effort to promote work zone safety, the speed limit in the work zone is reduced from 70 mph to 60 mph and the Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement system is being deployed in the project area. Under the provisions of Maryland SafeZones, the registered owner of a vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit in work zones is subject to a $80 civil penalty. The SafeZones program aims to change driver behavior and increase awareness of the impact of speed-related crashes in work zones. For details, visit safezones.maryland.gov.
The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during this necessary work to maintain and improve the transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits and driving pattern changes and slow down in construction zones.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
