Drivers Should Check Registration to Determine Vehicle Weight; Plan on Using US 50
(October 1, 2009) – Yesterday, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) restricted access on the MD 90 (Ocean City Expressway) Bridge over the Assawoman Bay in Ocean City, Worcester County. SHA reminds motorists that access is available only to passenger vehicles and unloaded pickup trucks. In addition to commercial trucks, RVs, buses and larger sport utility vehicles would likely be restricted. The best way to determine the vehicle weight is by checking the registered vehicle weight on the registration issued by the local department of motor vehicles. SHA has contacted steel suppliers; design activities for repairs to the 85-foot section of the Assawoman Bay Bridge are underway. During a recent bridge inspection, it was determined that immediate attention was necessary. Traffic will continue to be routed to area state roads, including US 50 (Harry Kelly Bridge) into Ocean City.
For information on MD 90, US 50 and other State numbered routes in Worcester County citizens may call toll free at 1-800-825-4742 or 410-677-4000. The 38 year-old bridge is 1.42 miles long and carries approximately 18,000 vehicles each day on two lanes of traffic. SHA thanks motorists for their patience and cooperation during the travel detours.
