US 40 sign
New Traffic Signals Included as Part of Intersection Reconstruction
(September 26, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has started a project to improve safety and mobility at the intersection of US 40 (Pulaski Highway) and Nottingham Road/Old Elk Neck Road near Elkton in Cecil County.
The $3.4 million project is expected to be complete in fall 2024, weather permitting. It includes the addition of new traffic signals, auxiliary lanes for turning/merging and drainage improvements. Additionally, the existing US 40 median channel island will be removed to allow left turns and through movements. The new signals will be coordinated with existing signals at the US 40 and MD 279 intersection to maximize traffic flow efficiency along the busy US 40 corridor.
Motorists can expect lane shifts and shoulder closures on US 40 and temporary closures of Nottingham Road and Old Elk Neck Road at US 40 during the work periods. There will be detour signs posted and access to local homes and businesses will be maintained throughout. Allan Myers Inc., of Fallston, is performing the work. Learn more about the project here.
The State Highway Administration maintains safety in work zones for our crews as well as motorists. Drivers need to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes, and slow down in construction zones.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
