SHA will Shift Traffic Onto New Bridge This Monday Night

(September 24, 2009) – This Monday, September 28, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will shift traffic along northbound and southbound I-270 at the bridge over Dr. Perry Road to the new bridge section in the median, weather permitting.

The traffic shift will occur overnight and in time for the Tuesday morning commute.  Shifting traffic to the new bridge section will not reduce the number of through lanes along I-270; it is necessary to allow crews to demolish and replace the existing northbound and southbound spans.  The $8 million project to replace the bridges along northbound and southbound I-270 will be complete in spring 2010, weather permitting.  More than 82,000 vehicles travel along I-270 each day.

Variable message signs and barrels will be placed in advance of the traffic shift to alert motorists.  SHA encourages motorists to stay alert in work zones.  SHA awarded the contract to F. O. Day, Inc. of Rockville.  Those who have questions about traffic operations on I-270 or other state numbered routes in Frederick County may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds, stay alert and use caution while driving through work zones.  When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
