STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO BEGIN MAUGANS AVENUE AT I-81 RAMP-WIDENING PROJECT IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

​Additional Lanes, Signal Improvements Will Improve Safety, Increase Mobility 

(September 12, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a $4 million ramp widening and signalization project this week at the I-81 (Maryland Veterans Memorial Highway) Exit 9 ramps at Maugans Avenue in Hagerstown.

The project, which is scheduled to be completed by summer 2024, will improve safety, reduce congestion and increase mobility.

Work includes:

  • adding an extra lane on the ramps from Maugans Avenue to southbound I-81, from southbound I-81 to Maugans Avenue and from northbound I-81 to Maugans Avenue;
  •  reconstructing traffic signals at the northbound and southbound I-81 exit ramps;
  • improving lighting and signage;
  • full-depth shoulder patching on Maugans Avenue at the I-81 interchange;
  • reconstructing the median along Maugans Avenue at the I-81 interchange;
  • improving storm drainage; and
  • constructing erosion and sediment facilities.

Weather permitted, work will be performed Mondays through Saturdays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and overnights, 9 p.m.-5 a.m. Crews will place temporary barriers on both the southbound and the northbound Exit 9 Maugans Avenue ramps. A temporary barrier wall will also be placed on the southbound entrance ramp and on Maugans Avenue. There will be intermittent lane closures throughout the construction.

Contractor F.O. Day, of Rockville, will use signs, cones and barrels to safely guide motorists through the work zone. Learn more about the project here.
