Safety Measure to Reduce Potential Conflicts at the Intersection

(August 2, 2023) –The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will permanently close the US 40 (Pulaski Highway) median crossover at Jackson Station Road and Winch Road beginning Tuesday, August 15. The closure will be complete by Thursday, August 16, weather permitting.

Crews from the State Highway Administration’s Elkton shop will install flex posts each night 10 p.m.-5 a.m. on these days, eliminating all traffic movements through the median except the left turn from eastbound US 40 to Jackson Station Road. The State Highway Administration is maintaining this left turn movement to help ensure timely emergency vehicle response.

US 40 westbound motorists wishing to turn left onto Jackson Station Road can make a U-turn at any of several nearby US 40 median crossovers. Right turns to and from US 40 will not be affected by this change.

This restriction is needed to address potential conflicts created when multiple vehicles are in the median at the same time. Prior efforts included pavement marking and signage improvements.

The State Highway Administration understands that lane closures associated with construction are inconvenient but are necessary to maintain a world-class transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes, and slowdown in construction zones.
