Partnership with County Upgrades Traffic Flow and Safety

(June 20, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has completed an $8.2 million project to improve the intersection of MD 108 (Clarksville Pike) at Centennial Lane/Beaverbrook Road in the Columbia area of Howard County. The project was completed in partnership with Howard County, which provided funding for construction. The project included the following improvements:

  • Widening both directions of MD 108 approaching Centennial Lane/Beaverbrook Road to accommodate new turning lanes at the intersection and new bicycle lanes.
  • Constructing a new, second left-turn lane from eastbound MD 108 to Centennial Lane.
  • Extending the right-turn lane on westbound MD 108 by approximately 350 feet.
  • Widening Centennial Lane to accommodate the new double left-turn lanes.
  • Constructing a median on MD 108 east of the intersection separating the travel directions.
  • Upgrading the pedestrian signal and crosswalk.
  • Improving drainage systems.
  • Installing a new traffic signal for the new turn lanes.

“This project, located in along beautiful Centennial Park, benefits thousands of local motorists, commuters, bicyclists and pedestrians in Columbia,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “These improvements will enhance safety operations and make the intersection more accessible for all users.”

The project was delivered through a cost-sharing agreement between State Highway Administration and Howard County.

“The State Highway Administration thanks Howard County for working with us to move this project forward,” said State Highway Administrator Tim Smith. “This project shows how partnerships between the state and county benefit our transportation network and its users.”

More details on the project can be found here on the project’s portal page.

State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
