Change Will Help Reduce Cut-Through Traffic in Parking And Driveway Areas of Local Businesses

(April 3, 2023) – The U-turn and left turn traffic movements at the northbound MD 279 (Elkton Road) intersection with Iron Hill Road in Cecil County will be eliminated this week to help promote traffic safety in that area. During the overnight hours of Wednesday, April 5, crews from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will install curb and flex post delineators to close the northbound MD 279 left turn lane at the intersection.

Northbound Elkton Road drivers can continue to the MD 277 (Fletchwood Road) intersection and make a U-turn to access southbound MD 279. This change will not affect southbound MD 279 left turns onto Iron Hill Road.

Closing the northbound left turn lane will help improve safety by reducing the number of vehicles using local business driveways and parking lots as a cut-through to access MD 279 and make U-turns at the Iron Hill Road intersection.

The State Highway Administration maintains safety in work zones for our crews as well as motorists. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes, and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
