Bridge Rehabilitation Project in Progress; Closures in Effect March 26-31

(March 23, 2023) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will implement overnight lane closures Sunday night through Friday morning, March 26-31, at two locations within the I-95/I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) interchange in the Arbutus area of Baltimore County.

Additionally, the ramp from northbound I-95 to westbound I-695 (Inner Loop) will be closed and detoured from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night from Sunday, March 26, through Thursday, March 30, and one lane will be closed on Sulphur Spring Road during non-peak daytime hours throughout the week.

The closures are required as part of the ongoing rehabilitation project for 10 bridges within the interchange. The project includes new driving surfaces and replacement of concrete traffic barriers and parapets. Learn more about the project here. Beginning Sunday evening, motorists can expect the following:

Ramp Closure:

The ramp from northbound I-95 to westbound I-695 (Inner Loop) will be closed 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning, Sunday through Thursday, March 26-30.

Detour:

Motorists will be directed to stay on northbound I-95 past I-695 to the Caton Avenue interchange, go through the interchange to southbound I-95 back to westbound I-695.

Daytime Lane Closure:

A single-lane closure will be required on Sulphur Spring Road beneath the I-95 bridges during non-peak hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, March 27-31. The closure will alternate eastbound or westbound, with flagging operations to control two-way traffic on one open lane.

Overnight Lane Closures:

Overnight single- or double-lane closures will be required at two locations, although access will be maintained at each:

  • Northbound and Southbound I-95 at I-695: Motorists can expect overnight single-lane closures between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. and double left-lane closures between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, March 26-30.
  • Eastbound and Westbound I-695 (Outer Loop and Inner Loop) at I-95: A single left lane or right lane will be closed overnight each evening from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on I-695 under I-95, Sunday through Thursday, March 26-30.
  •  Westbound I-695 (Inner Loop): Overnight double-lane closures will be required between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, March 26-30.

The State Highway Administration understands the closures will inconvenience some travelers and asks motorists to please stay alert and be patient as you pass through the work zones. Crews will use digital message boards, temporary signs, and barrels to direct drivers safely through the area. All work is weather permitting and is expected to be complete by the end of the week.

Contractor Wagman Heavy Civil Inc., of York, Pa., will perform the work.
