What:
The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will host an open house for its nationally recognized Intercounty Connector’s (ICC) environmental program.
SHA staff will present the program’s many innovative features in a display format and will be available to answer questions.

The ICC’s environmental mitigation program replaces the impacts from the project and the stewardship program goes above and beyond requirements.  SHA’s commitment to the environment is embedded in the project, including longer bridges over sensitive streams, sound walls, and passages for wildlife, storm water improvements and numerous other enhancements.  The design integrates state-of-the-art environmental features, including erosion and sediment controls.
In addition, the media and the public will have the opportunity to tour the new site of the National Capital Trolley Museum’s Visitor Center, built with SHA funding.
When:
Saturday, August 29th, 9 a.m. to noon

Who:
SHA environmental staff
Where:
The National Capital Trolley Museum
1313 Bonifant Road, Colesville, MD, 20905-5955  http://www.dctrolley.org/preview.htm
Why:
The ICC is one of America’s greenest highways.  Protecting the natural environment is a first-order priority for SHA and it intends to set a new standard by going beyond compensating for the ICC’s unavoidable impacts.  SHA is investing $370 million, more than 15 percent of the project’s cost, not just to mitigate environmental impact, but also to protect and enhance the natural and human environments.
