Transit, Highway and Airport Projects Among MDOT Honors
(February 2, 2023) – Improvements to transit along the North Avenue corridor in Baltimore, the dualization of MD 32 in Howard County and replacement of 1960s-era bridges on I-495 in Prince George’s County were among Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects honored today by the
Maryland Quality Initiative (MdQI) for 2022. In all, MDOT and its partners received nine awards for outstanding planning and construction projects at the 30th Annual MdQI conference and awards event, held this week at the Baltimore Convention Center.
“These Maryland Quality Initiative awards recognize the exceptional work MDOT agencies have accomplished in collaboration with our contractors and community partners,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, Acting Secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation. “The honors are well-deserved and reflect highly on the men and women who work hard every day to promote safety, reliability and equitable access across every facet of Maryland’s transportation network.”
MdQI is an organization of public and private sector agencies and industry associations representing Maryland’s transportation industry. Each year, a panel of experts evaluate Award of Excellence nominations. For 2022, MdQI presented awards for Planning; Partnering (private/public sector teams); Innovation; Green/Sustainability/Environmental projects; and Modal/Public Works projects Under $5 Million and Over $5 Million. The group also presented top awards for MdQI Project of the Year Under $5 Million and MdQI Project of the Year Over $5 Million.
Representatives from MDOT State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA), MDOT Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA), MDOT Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA), MDOT Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) and the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) attended the February 2 awards ceremony.
MDOT SHA and its partners received five awards overall for studies or projects, including the dualization of MD 32 from Linden Church Road to I-70 in Howard County; the replacement and widening of the I-95 and I-495 bridges over Suitland Parkway in Prince George’s County; the I-495 and I-270 Managed Lanes Study in Montgomery and Prince’s George’s counties; and the rehabilitation of the Seminary Road bridge over I-495 in Montgomery County.
“Establishing partnerships and building relationships through open communication and cooperations is at the very heart and purpose of MdQI,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “Our transportation industry partners are critical to us fulfilling the mission of connecting our customers to life’s opportunities.”
MDOT SHA also shared a partnering award with MDOT MTA for a joint project that enhanced facilities and multi-modal connectivity for bus and train riders at the Aberdeen MARC station in Harford County in connection with the Aberdeen Transit Oriented Development area.
MDOT MTA and its contracting partners took home two awards for the North Avenue transit corridor project in Baltimore City, including MdQI Project of the Year Over $5 Million. The North Avenue project worked to upgrade existing transit facilities, improve pedestrian and bicycle access and support economic opportunities.
MDOT MAA and its partners received two MdQI awards, one for its project to reconstruct a taxiway at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport to improve edge lighting, asphalt pavement and other upgrades, and another for repairs to storm-damaged hangars at Martin State Airport in Baltimore County.
