Major Delays Expected: Motorists Can Expect Multiple Lane Closures

(January 30, 2023) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close multiple lanes on the northbound I-95 bridge over the Patapsco River in the Elkridge area of Baltimore and Howard counties over the next two nights so that crews can safely repair damaged joints. The work has since been extended into next week.

Crews will be working 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning. MDOT SHA will use electronic signs, barrels, and cones to alert motorists about the lane closures. MDOT SHA urges nighttime motorists planning to travel through this area to consider using MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway), US 1 (Washington Boulevard), or US 29 (Columbia Pike) as alternate routes during the work.

Starting at 10 p.m. Monday, crews will close two right lanes on the northbound section of the bridge, then a third lane will close at midnight, leaving one lane open to traffic.  This work has been extended to 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursday, Feb 2 and Sunday, Feb. 4. If the work is not complete, crews will work the same hours Monday, Feb 5 and Tuesday, Feb 6.

The repairs will take two nights to complete, with crews working 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night into the following morning. MDOT SHA will use electronic signs, barrels and cones to alert motorists about the lane closures. MDOT SHA understands the closures will inconvenience some travelers, and asks all motorists to please be stay alert and be patient as you pass through the work zone.

MDOT SHA also reminds motorists to check their vehicles this winter to make sure they are ready for the weather. Make sure tires have adequate tread and radiator hoses are free of leaks or defects. Also, make sure you have a full reservoir of coolant. It is also a good idea to keep a survival bag on hand that includes a protein bar, flares or other warning lights, and a blanket.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
