(August 17, 2009)  Weather permitting tonight, as part of the Maryland State Highway Administration’s (SHA) $2.5 billion Intercounty Connector (ICC) project, lane closures will occur along I-95 in both northbound and southbound directions from the MD 198 interchange (exit 33) to the MD 212 interchange (exit 29).  The number of lanes closed will vary depending on the work being performed.

Northbound single lane closures will begin at 8 p.m. and double lane closures will begin at 11 p.m.  Southbound single lane closures will begin at 7 p.m. and double lane closures will begin at 11 p.m. Motorists can expect delays during these times and are encouraged to use alternate routes.  The lane closures are necessary to shift traffic lanes to the left, so that new collector-distributor roads and auxiliary lanes can be constructed on the right side of I-95.

Additionally, the left three lanes of northbound and southbound I-95 will be narrowed from 12 feet to 11 feet.  The right lane will remain 12 feet, and a 10-foot left shoulder will be maintained.  Temporary concrete barriers will be used to close the right (outside) shoulder, with a one-foot offset to the travel lane.  Weather permitting, the following work activities will occur on, or about:

August 17-20: Motorists will experience nightly lane closures on I-95 Southbound  (7 p.m.-6 a.m.), while asphalt tie-ins are paved for I-95 realignment.

August 24: Traffic switch on I-95 southbound into the median widening will occur during overnight hours.  The new alignment will remain in effect until July 2011.

August 25-September 29:  Motorists will experience lane shifts as work progresses.  Nightly lane closures will occur on I-95 northbound (8 p.m.-7 a.m.) and southbound (7 p.m.-6 a.m.) for re-striping and installation of temporary concrete barriers.

Portable variable message signs will be in place to inform motorists of the lane shifts.  All three emergency crossovers between the MD 198 and the MD 212 interchanges will be open and unrestricted, including the emergency crossover currently closed.  Emergency Pull-Offs will be provided at 1500-foot intervals along the shoulder closures.

This work is part of the Contract C section of the ICC, from just west of US 29 to just east of I-95.  The $513.9 million Contract C was awarded to IC3, a Joint Venture consisting of Shirley Contracting Company, LLC; Clark Construction Group, LLC; Atkinson Construction Company, LLC; Facchina Construction Company, Inc.; and Trumbull Corporation.  The team's lead design firm is Dewberry & Davis, LLC.

Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter  pickups.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
