Starting Sunday, Overnight Ramp and Lane Closures Will Be in Effect
(October 14, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is continuing milling and paving work to prepare for the upcoming rehabilitation of 10 bridges at the I-95/I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) interchange in the Arbutus area of Baltimore County.
Beginning Sunday, MDOT SHA will implement overnight lane closures along the I-95 northbound and southbound ramps at I-695, along with full ramp closures within the interchange. All work is weather permitting and may be performed on the next possible weeknight.
The overnight lane and ramp closures are scheduled as follows:
- Northbound I-95 at I-695: Each night, Sunday, October 16, through Wednesday, October 19, there will be a single right-lane closure beginning at 7 p.m., then a double right-lane closure at 9 p.m., until 5 a.m. the next day.
- Southbound I-95 at I-695: Each night, Monday, October 17, through Thursday, October 20, there will be a single right-lane closure beginning at 7 p.m., then a double right-lane closure at 9 p.m., until 5 a.m. the next day.
- Ramp from I-95 northbound to Exit 49A eastbound I-695 (Outer Loop): This ramp will be closed overnight on four nights: Sunday night, October 16, through Wednesday night, October 19, from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next day.
- Detour: Motorists needing to access I-695 eastbound from northbound I-95 will be directed to continue north to exit 50B, Caton Avenue. Proceed on Caton Avenue through the interchange to turn left at the traffic signal onto southbound I-95. From there, merge to far left to the left-side exit 49A. eastbound I-695 (Outer Loop).
- Ramp from southbound I-95 to eastbound I-695 (Outer Loop): This ramp will be closed overnight on Thursday, October 20, from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Friday, October 21.
- Detour: Prior to the I-695 interchange, motorists can take Exit 50A, southbound Caton Avenue, and proceed on southbound Caton Avenue to southbound US 1 Alt. (Washington Blvd.). Continue on to US 1 Alt to left-turn ramp at traffic signal to eastbound I-695.
During lane and ramp closures, motorists are encouraged to plan for extra travel time and consider alternate routes. Crews will use digital message boards, temporary signs, and barrels to direct drivers safely through the nighttime work zone. MDOT SHA contractor Wagman Heavy Civil Inc., of York, Pa., will perform the work.
The larger project includes the installation of new riding surfaces on bridges within the I-95 / I-695 interchange and the replacement of concrete traffic barriers and parapets on the bridges. Maryland’s Move Over Law requires motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and all motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.
