Bridge Closure and Detour Scheduled for September 11 Now Rescheduled as a Flagging Operation for this Saturday Morning

(September 15, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is scheduled to pour concrete for the deck (riding surface) of the new US 1 (Washington Boulevard) bridge over the CSX Transportation railroad lines in the Halethorpe area of Baltimore County from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, September 17, weather and railroad operations permitting.

A flagging operation will be in place during the deck work to safely direct motorists through the work zone. This work is part of the $36.9 million project to replace the bridge over the CSX rail lines and is necessary to allow crews to pour and set the new concrete bridge deck. The work was scheduled for last Sunday but did not take place due to inclement weather.

The intersection of the south end of Clarke Boulevard at US 1 will remain closed 24 hours a day until early 2023 for reconstruction of the intersection as part of the bridge replacement project.

After the concrete deck pour is complete, there will be temporary single-lane closures on US 1 in the vicinity of the bridge, when necessary, on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The bridge will remain open to traffic during lane closures, with flag persons controlling two-way traffic.

The project is expected to be complete by summer 2023, weather permitting.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, Lane Construction of Glen Burnie, is performing the work. More information on this bridge project can be found here. Customers who have questions about this work may contact the MDOT SHA District 4 Office - Construction Division at 410-229-2300, 1-866-998-0367 or shadistrict4@mdot.maryland.gov

Beginning October 1, 2022, the Move Over Law in Maryland will require motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.
